Kozy Kabin: Simple, Kind, Enough
Dee designed her Kozy Kabin in 2004 after buying a set of plans from Jay Shafer of Four Lights Houses. The space was inspired by seeing Jay’s house and hanging out with him in it. Dee re-engineered the design with a slightly different trailer set-up and a completely different floor plan – one that was even more simple, comfortable, and basic. The 84 square foot Kozy Kabin Tiny House has no running water, no exclusive bathroom space, and just a smidgen of solar electric power. But it all makes Dee happy enough, as she wrote in her memoir, “The Big Tiny“:
“Admitting that I’m happy enough makes me wonder if I’m falling short of my potential as a middle-class American; like I should want more out of life than this tiny house and the backyard, and the way it feels to sit on the porch and watch the sun come up. But it works for me, and besides, I’m not sure that I was any happier when I had a bigger, more normal house.”
While Dee’s house was designed with her needs in mind, it is an inviting design for anyone who wants to keep things simple, affordable, and functional.

What the Plans Include
Our plan packages are focused on helping you build your own home, so we’ve included details for the following:
- Custom-built trailer features and plans
- Floor framing
- Wall framing
- Roof framing
- Detailed section for floors, walls and roof
- 3-D modeling of the framing, so you can identify how it all comes together
- A rafter plan and suggested materials list for framing materials
We do not include an electrical diagram, appliance specifications, and interior sections to show cabinetry details and counter heights. Why not? Because we believe each home is unique and we want to encourage you to install the sink, stove, and toilet that will fit your unique needs.
Dee famously built her original Kozy Kabin tiny house for $10,000 in 2004. She was able to build on a budget using tons of salvaged materials and putting in around four (unpaid) hours of time per day on construction, for three months. To build this house yourself today, budget for a construction cost anywhere between $15,000 and $25,000 depending on material choices.
The Kozy Kabin sits on a tandem axle trailer that is 14 feet long and rated for 7,500 lbs. The house weighs at least 5,000 lbs depending on interior finishes. The plans are based on the design of a standard utility trailer, which is widely available and generally affordable. If you’re interested in upgrading and adding more floor insulation, we always encourage people to consider using our favorite tiny house trailers from Iron Eagle Trailers. Derin from Shelter Wise and Dee from PAD even helped them design their trailers to be perfect for tiny homes. Tell them PAD sent you, and you’ll get $50 off your order.
With all of our plans, we recommend a copy of Go House Go, our how-to manual for building a tiny house on wheels. It’s the book Dee wished existed when she built her little house, and she wrote it to save everybody else all the time and trouble that she went through to figure out how to build smart and safe.
For the Kozy Kabin, we offer two versions of the plans: An instant download of PDF building plans, OR an instant download of PDF building plans AND an editable SketchUp file of the design. The PDF+SketchUp option is ideal for people who plan to make significant changes to the design, or who want to model customizations like siding colors and interior layouts digitally instead trying to picture it all in their mind’s eyes.
